In Mahdist traditions and the hadith sources of both major Islamic denominations, numerous narrations predict the occurrence of bitter and sweet events in the Orient (Mashriq). These traditions can be terrifying and cautionary, or hopeful and inspiring; however, misidentifying their referents can pave the way for the infiltration of baseless discussions into the field of apocalyptic studies. Benefiting from these traditions—by hearing their warnings or receiving their messages of hope—and preventing unfounded speculations is only possible when the precise location intended by these hadiths is correctly identified. Therefore, the issue addressed in this study is the determination of the meaning and the identification (instance-finding) of the "Orient" in Mahdist traditions. In this paper, relevant hadiths were collected using library research methods and then categorized and, as far as possible, clarified using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings of this research indicate that the term " Orient " in Mahdist traditions does not necessarily refer to a single specific geographical region; rather, each category of these narrations points to a specific location, such as Iraq, Hejaz, or Khorasan. The most significant category of these traditions indicates the uprising of a people from the Orient. This study strengthens the hypothesis that the " Orient " in these hadiths refers to the territory known today as "Iran." This interpretation is based on two types of evidence: first, the hadith family (internal textual evidence); and second, the absence of an effective and powerful center of Shiism in regions other than the land of Iran.
