An Analysis of the Pathological Aspects of Ali-Muhammad Shirazi's Personality in His Claim to Mahdism

Abstract

The discourse of Mahdism has undergone various transformations throughout history. One of the most significant threats to the awaiting community is the risk of falling into the trap of claimants who, by asserting spiritual and religious experiences, pave the way for the formation of various sects and schools of thought. Among these individuals, "Ali Muhammad Shirazi" is notable for having founded a new faith in contemporary times based on such claims. During his trial, some questioned his mental health. The aim of this research is to investigate, through a descriptive and psychological analysis of Ali-Muhammad Shirazi’s personal and social life, to what extent his claims can be assessed in relation to his mental health. Ali-Muhammad Shirazi, nurtured within the Sheikhiyya school, took advantage of the political, social, and religious atmosphere of his time, and by exploiting Shia beliefs, first claimed to be the "Báb" (gate) and, during the last two years of his life, claimed Mahdism, prophethood, and divinity. The findings of this research, based on a psychological analysis of Ali-Muhammad Bab and supported by historical evidence, suggest that he was likely afflicted by two personality disorders: schizotypal personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder. Consequently, belief in any of his claims and the influence on his followers, considering these personality disorders, is deemed irrational.
