This article discusses Mahdism from a Shia perspective and Spiritualism under labels such as new mysticism, pseudo-mysticism, emerging religious movements, false mysticism, using a comparative approach. Since comparative studies often focus on similarities and differences, the functional analysis of Mahdism and Spiritualism reveals both points of convergence and divergence. Functional similarities include addressing people’s inner and spiritual tendencies and providing guidance and refuge in psychological and spiritual challenges. Functional differences, however, emerge in areas such as humanism versus God-centeredness, secularism versus religiosity, anti-superstition versus superstition, rationalism versus irrationalism, and others. Given the unchecked growth of Spiritualism in the contemporary era and the overwhelming influence of atheistic and secular ideologies (rooted in liberalism and humanism) imposing themselves under the guise of Spiritualism in Eastern and Islamic countries, the need for research in this field becomes evident. By acknowledging the fundamental divergences and distinctions, as well as the Islamic roots and foundations of Spiritualism, this article not only identifies various strands of Spiritualism but also compares and contrasts them with Mahdism studies. Data were collected through library and documentary research and analyzed using descriptive, comparative, and analytical methods to clarify the points of convergence and divergence between Mahdism studies and Spiritualism.
